Challenges in Creating Sustainable Development in Haiti

Haiti has not yet recovered from the massive earthquake of January 2010 that devastated the infrastructures of the country, killing over 230,000 people and leaving more than 1.5 million homeless. In October of 2016, Hurricane Mathew destroyed the southern region of the country. Thousands of families lost their houses, farms and livestock, and these people have been neglected. Millions of dollars have been pledged on behalf of victims of natural disasters in Haiti, but little has been done to reach and to support those who are really in need.

Hope and Change for Haiti is a nonprofit organization based in Rhode Island, and aims to work jointly with the people of Haiti to recover from these natural catastrophes with dignity. HCH’s initial projects include a “Build better Build Cheaper Project” that consists of building permanent houses anti-earthquake and hurricane-resistant in the village of Jeannette/Paillant. A cistern of 15,000 gallons of water will be built alongside of the new houses. So families can have access to water in the dry season.
